Welcome to the Starting Over Strong website. We are a 501c4  nonprofit organization committed to transforming the policies that harm our communities, raising public awareness of possibilities and purpose, and supporting the candidates and campaigns that align with Starting Over Strong’s mission. SOS aims to transform systemic disparities, increase the amount of tax dollars that return to the people to expand essential services, and co-power with those most impacted as they lead for long-term change.

1. Our Mission

Starting Over Strong (SOS) is committed to building collective power that drives political and systemic change that will help all people, but specifically those who have been subjected to state harm through hyperincarceration, physical and mental abuse, and the loss of loved ones to a system of harm. SOS amplifies the voices of impacted individuals by centering and following their leadership and strategies through policy advocacy, public awareness campaigns, and endorsing candidates who share our vision for justice and equity. 

Through our work, we increase advocacy for and facilitate access to essential services within the reentry ecosystem, including housing, job placement, workforce retraining, and food security, for vulnerable populations with a focus on those directly impacted by the carceral system. By advocating for policy reforms, raising public awareness, and supporting candidates aligned with its mission, SOS aims to transform systemic disparities, expand essential services, and empower those most impacted to lead long-term change.
